Research Progress on Chemical Constituents and Pharmacological Effects of Passiflora edulis Sims

  • Passiflora edulis Sims is distributed in tropical regions of Europe and South America, which has been used in folk medicine of some countries to the treatment of anxiety, cough, insomnia and other diseases.Investigations from the country and the abroad have been published demonstrating the main chemical constituents flavones, triterpenes and alkaloids of Passiflora edulis fruit, juice and its by-products (peel, leaves and seeds), which possessed several biological activities such as antioxidant, antibacterial effect and neuroprotection.The present review aimed to summarize the previous findings related with nutritional composition, bioactive molecules and provide a reference for the further utilization and development of the Passiflora edulis Sims and its co-products.
